The Spirit

My childhood dreams of longing to be a horse could be seen as a metaphor with my grown eyes. I longed to be Spirit. To fly. To be free. To ride the wind as is often depicted in Native American folklore. I was strongly spiritual before I was even aware of Spirituality.

That is where my penchant for Native American culture came from. And the renewal of my faith in Christianity. I believe in the Holy Spirit. And it is written, ‘Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.’

That is how powerful the Spirit is. It is unforgivable to even speak against it. Scary.

So where is it? What is it?

Is it the invisible air that keeps us all, the righteous and the wicked, breathing? In scientific terms is it oxygen and hydrogen and carbon dioxide?

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.’

Is it a set of ideals? A way of life, apart from the sinful debauchery that is given such power in this, Satan’s realm?

‘Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.  The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.’

Is it a supernatural aid and comforter? The place where miracles come from?

The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.

I truly do not know. As I have not been born again yet, my understanding is limited.

“I am telling you the truth,” replied Jesus, “that no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. A person is born physically of human parents, but is born spiritually of the Spirit.

I do know it is floundering in this day in age. As Satan is free to practice all sorts of wickedness out in the open, people’s holy, spiritual natures have been robbed of them.

I believe the Spirit is at least, in part, a seed that lives in each of us. The seed could also be the Word, as the metaphor of the seed on good soil would attest. And this single kernel in us, if spiritually watered and nurtured, is more powerful than all of Satan’s worldly powers combined. For, ‘You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.’

That is why the devil tries so hard to be frightening and instill fear. For without fear he is nothing. And the Bible says a thousand times over not to fear anything in this world. The only fear should be a fear of God and of not living according to His Word.

‘Praise the LORD! How blessed is the man who fears the LORD, Who greatly delights in His commandments.’
