SXSW has begun here in Austin and I am going to be a bike messenger throughout it. Should be a fun way to take in the sights. If last night was any indication, Austin is on the fast track to decay and insanity. This once sleepy, little Texas college town is now trying to be LA. It breaks my heart and it doesn’t fit. Change must come. Hopefully we will evolve, as Bill Hicks pointed out, we did not stop evolving with the miracle of thumbs.
He was so right, all these systems we have built are not working for us anymore because
they are outdated and unnecessary. Especially the university system. So much money wasted for so little return. People just feel they have no ‘choice’, with glass ceilings for nearly every position requiring some sort of degree. You know what solves that? Not caring what your job is and/or getting creative about what your work will be. Becoming valuable based on your knowledge and skills, not your superfluous degree. I know a genius who manages a coffee shop and a high school dropout who makes close to six figures doing sound and lighting for corporate events.
Make yourself invaluable and the money will come. Or, if not, if you just enjoy reading and taking baths more than anything in the world, work a piddily little job and continue to do what you love in your free time. ‘For the love of money is the root of many evils,’ one of the most prevalent evils being discontent. If only money could indeed buy peace and happiness… Then I might learn to give a hoot about it.
We are a stagnant people. Stagnation Nation should be our new national tagline. Let’s keep building the same old shit, doing the same old things, holding on to the same old ideologies until we are a festering bed of unhappiness and neurosis, where only the mosquitos, bacteria and parasites thrive. Satan’s dreamland. Fuck that, we are still humans with a free will and God still loves us. I see this mess as a Father observing and allowing his son to make idiotic, even harmful decisions so he learns better they only way how. The hard way.
And as for me? I am an absolute geyser of boiling-point desire for change. Living water eagerly flowing back to the source… ‘Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ How am I to thrive in this dismal land of stagnant waters?
With God, or not at all. That’s how.
‘”With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”‘
And the more people learn to let go as I have, the more all the waters around us will start to move too. It’s nature.
