‘I will fear no evil.’ // ‘The prudent sees the evil and hides himself, but the naive go on, and are punished for it.’
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ // ‘Do not desire company with the wicked.’ ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’
‘When you sit down to dine with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you, And put a knife to your throat if you are a man of great appetite. Do not desire his delicacies, for it is deceptive food.’ // ‘What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them.’ ‘Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then eliminated.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)’
‘Refuse to sit with the wicked.’ // ‘The wise in heart accept commands.’
‘They will walk after the Lord, He will roar like a lion.’ ‘The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.’ // ‘Like lions crouched in hiding, they wait to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture the helpless and drag them away in nets.’
‘”How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, Lucifer, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth.”‘ // ‘”I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”‘
‘”Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You will know them by their fruits.”‘ // ‘”Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.”‘
After my encounter with the devil vying for my soul, I sought to return to my Texas Jesus-loving roots only to be confused as a returning adult. What are these contradictions? Why should the Lord be a riddler? But he clearly is not. It is the devil, the father of lies, who wants to deceive us and take the Word from our hearts. I see the contradictions as a reassurance that either way, one way or another, if you have faith, you will be alright.
‘”Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”‘
If you surrender your will to God and have faith in Jesus Christ, all else is a mere lesson, a refinement of character. ‘”For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”‘
‘Those who harden their hearts fall into trouble.’ I have learned this lesson in a most terribly hard manner. If this verse was truth, all else is undoubtedly the gospel truth in my eyes. So I will live (and die) by it.
